A Student’s Guide to Search Engines

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Kelly Garbato The Internet consists of billions upon billions of individual files, located on millions of different web sites. Certainly, then, the Net is a veritable treasure trove of information for students, who routinely turn the Web for help with their coursework. Yet, all this knowledge is of little use if you dont know how to locate and access what you need, quickly and easily. Enter search engines! Search engines are essentially tools that allow you to search for information available on the Web using keywords and search terms. Rather than searching the Web itself, however, you are actually searching the engine’s database of files. Search engines are actually three separate tools in one. The spider is a program that crawls through the Web, moving from link to link, looking for new web pages. Once it finds new sites or files, it adds them to the search engine’s index. This index is a searchable database of all the information the spider has found on the Web. Some engines index every word in each document, while others select certain words (such as those occurring most often). The search engine itself is a piece of software that allows users to search the engine’s database. Clearly, an engine’s search is only as good as the index it’s searching. So, when you run a query using a search engine, you’re really only searching the engine’s index of what’s on the Web, as opposed to the entire Web. No one search engine is capable of indexing everything on the Web - there’s just too much information out there! Consequently, much of the information overlooked in search engine queries includes breaking news, documents, multimedia files, images, tables, and other data. Collectively, these types of resources are referred to as the deep or invisible Web. They’re buried deep in the Web and are invisible to search engines. Search engines usually feature advertisements in the form of paid results. Those sites that pay a fee may be included in your search results, usually at the very top of the list. Some engines group advertisers separately, for instance, on the side of the page. While search engines must clearly label all advertisers, they vary widely in their compliance with FTC rules. The method by which an engine determines how its search results will be presented to the user is called ranking. Early search engines, now called first generation search engines, used term ranking to organize their results. In term ranking, a result’s importance is determined by how often and where the search term appears in the document. Most of today’s search engines are much more sophisticated than this. These second generation search engines use a number of methods, sometimes in combination, to rank their results. In relevancy ranking, second generation engines use various algorithms to determine a document’s relevance to your search. This is by far the most popular ranking method, though engines often allow you to sort your results alphabetically or group them by site, source, and/or concept. In addition to ranking method, a number of other features distinguish one engine from another. You will encounter two basic types of search engines. Individual search engines are just that - individual engines which compile and search their own databases. Meta search engines, on the other hand, search several individual search engines at once. Meta engines do not maintain their own databases, but search those assembled by other engines. Meta engines present their search results in one of two ways. Using separate retrieval, they may group the results collected from each individual engine separately, so that you have a list of results from each engine. Separate retrieval often results in many redundant hits. Collated retrieval solves this problem by weeding out duplicate results obtained from different individual engines. Many engines allow you to choose between the two or even use collated retrieval while still grouping your results by search engine source. Search engines can be useful when conducting research, as long as you exercise caution. Always keep an eye out for paid results, and try to avoid engines that don’t disclose their advertisers. Search engines are a good idea when you have a very specific or obscure topic to research. Queries for broad or popular topics will return more results than is practical, and the information found may be of questionable quality. Thus, you should stick to academic databases unless you are having trouble finding enough information on your topic. Search engines can also be helpful if you’re looking for specific types of files, such as pictures. Meta engines are even more helpful in tackling those needle in a haystack searches, since they conduct several searches at once. For this reason, they are also good if you want to get an overview of what is out there, or if your topic is an uncommon one. Keep in mind, though, that meta searches will only retrieve the most relevant results from each engine, since they’re limited in the number of results they can uncover. Another casualty of meta searches is flexibility. Because you’re searching many engines at once, you’re only granted access to the search features that they all have in common. Finally, you should not rely on any one engine. Recall that each engine draws on a different database (or group of databases, as is the case with meta engines). Some cover portions of the deep web, while others go nowhere near it. Accordingly, you will get a different set of results depending on which engine you use. Rather than become familiar with only one, try out a number of them and pick a dozen or so that you like. While you should read each engine’s instructions before running a search, don’t try to memorize all the details, since they’re likely to change anyway! Search engines are an excellent means of locating otherwise impossible-to-find information online. There are many options available for the discriminating student researcher, so be selective and choose an engine that meets your unique needs! Cash Advance Loans Online - A Great Way to Make it Until Your Next Pay Day

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Carrie_Reeder]Carrie Reeder A payday advance is a loan obtained to cover unexpected expenses or if you happen to be short on cash and payday is still several days away. Payday advances can usually be deposited into your checking account the very same day you apply or overnight. A payday advance is meant to be a short-term loan, not a revolving credit account. The interest you pay on a payday advance is higher than with a traditional loan. In applying for a payday advance, you will generally supply the loan company with your name, address, phone number, employment and checking account information. There is no credit check. You can qualify for a payday advance up to $1000 dollars or more that is to be repaid when you receive your next paycheck or over your next two to three pay periods. Payday advance companies may require you to receive your paycheck through direct deposit, but some allow you to qualify for a payday advance even if you receive a paper check from your employer that you deposit into your checking account. The interest rates charged for a payday advance loan are significantly higher than with other types of lenders, but the majority of payday advance companies will allow you to split your payments over your next several pay periods to make repayment of your loan simple and painless. A payday advance is an excellent way to get the cash you need until payday. Many companies have programs that require no faxing of your bank statement and latest check stub. Even if you are self-employed or receive income in the form of monthly benefits you can qualify for a payday advance. You may be required to fax proof of income in certain situations, but you can still receive your money fast. Many payday advance companies can approve your loan within an hour of receiving the necessary documentation. No matter what type of income you receive each month, if you are in need of extra cash until payday a payday advance may be the answer for your short-term financial needs. A number of payday advance companies offer reduced rates for first time customers or simply offer a discount loan program to all customers. Contact the payday loan company of your choice to see if you are eligible to receive up to $1000 dollars or more that can be deposited into your checking account often the very same day you apply. Teen Hair Style Ideas

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Michael Barrows There is perhaps never a better time when you can pull off the very trendy and funky hair styles as when you are a teenager. The teen hair style, while always evolving and reflecting the tastes of the generation, always tends to be a trendy hair style that is hard for older people to imitate and still look great. From a ton of texture to funky and fresh color techniques, the teen hair style is always at the cutting edge of fashion. The funky teen hair style always looks like it has been taken straight off the runway. Infused with rich, trendy color, the teen hair style does a lot to capture an era of style completely. Just think about all of the famous teen hair styles, of the past. Complete generations have been defined by the trendy hair styles worn by the teenagers of that time. Today, top teen hair styles are trendier than ever and cover a wide range of styles, lengths and textures. Perhaps for the first time, the teen hair style is a reflection of the person within instead of the popular teen hair styles without. I mean just think of how many popular teen hair styles there are to choose from. We are no longer like the cookie-cutter generations that came before. While there are a great deal of teen hair styles to choose from and numerous variations of each, it can be hard to find the perfect teen hair style to reflect your personality and tastes. So, here are a few ideas for your next teen hair style. The short teen hair style The teen hair style has never been shorter. In fact, many teenage girls are now wearing their hair shorter than the boys. But one thing is always sure; the short teen hair style is always a trendy hair style. Full of texture and interest, the short teen hair style is never dull. Probably the most popular short teen hair style of today is a variation on the pixie cut. Only about 1″ to 1 ” in length throughout, this teen hair style is heavily textured and can be worn in several different ways. From rigid spikes and soft funk to close-to-the-head tresses, this teen hair style accommodates a wide range of tastes. The textured teen hair style No matter what length your locks are, texture is needed to pull off a trendy hair style. This texture can be created through cutting and razoring techniques, it can be natural as in the case of natural curl, and it can be created chemically through perms and relaxers or thermal styling tools. As mentioned before, today’s teen hair style is never boring. Not only does texture liven up your teen hair style, it can also take a popular style and make it uniquely your own. Take for instance a simple layered teen hair style. Falling about shoulder length, this teen hair style would be dull if left to hang straight. But if you take the same cut and add pomade to texturize the ends or add spiral curl to this teen hair style with tube rollers, you could really have a different teen hair style each and every day. The teen hair style and color Every trendy hair style needs color, and the same is true for the teen hair style. Adding color can be as simple as a few highlights or lowlights or it can come in the form of dramatic changes such as dark colors for the Gothic look. Color for the teen hair style can also be a statement of itself. Just look at the colors worn by Pink and Christina Aguilera. Their most popular teen hair style cuts were not really anything that unique, it was their color that set their teen hair style apart from others. When choosing color for your teen hair style do not be afraid to try something funky and unique. This may be the only time in your life that you can get by with blue highlights. Also, do not become wrapped up in choosing the same color for your teen hair style that you have seen worn by other people. Stay unique, venture out, be brave and you will always have a teen hair style worthy of envy. Michael Barrows’ website gives great advice for good hair. Pastor Power: Empowering Pastors

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Paul Davis Pastors are some of the most wonderful people on the planet. They give of themselves sacrificially often asking nothing in return. They point us to God. Pastors pray with us about our needs. Pastors counsel us through our life’s challenges and fears. Pastors consistently deliver sermons to uplift our souls. Pastors visit us when we are in the hospital. They officiate our funerals and bury our dead. Pastors prayerfully dedicate our babies and baptize our children. Pastors provide moral support and divine guidance through life’s transitions. Yet when Pastors are faced with hard times themselves, how many of us are truly there for them? How easy is it living by faith and letting your salary be dependent upon peoples weekly generosity? It certainly does not sound easy. I don’t see many people lining up for that job. Pastors have to confront numerous challenges in life and ministry. Some of those are internal whereas others are external beyond their control. Internal challenges can be emotional as Pastors are continually giving of themselves on a deep emotional level. If they are not careful Pastors can get so empty emotionally themselves while ministering continually to others that they can have a breakdown. It is extremely important that Pastors daily prayer, have the support of a loving spouse and family, along with be encouraged by their congregation. Pastors agonize deeply over losing loved ones, seeing church members leave and friends becoming ill. Pastors are people too. They grieve just like the rest of us. Though they appear strong and often bring God’s Word to us in challenging times, this does not lessen the challenges they themselves must face and overcome. Here are 10 things you can do to empower your Pastor: 1. Pray for your Pastor 2. Tell your Pastor you love him or her 3. Offer your time to serve your Pastor in any way possible 4. Give of your finances via tithes and offerings to sustain your Pastor 5. Allow your Pastor vacation time like everyone else 6. Provide your Pastor with time to attend enriching seminars for his/her own development 7. Have a sense of humor and make church life fun 8. Encourage your Pastor by praising him/her for what a great job they are doing 9. Be a blessing to your Pastor’s spouse so they too can feel a part of the congregation and celebrated for their sacrifice 10. Surprise your Pastor monthly with some form of appreciation and recognition from the congregation By doing these things you make life in ministry fun, more bearable and enjoyable. Your Pastor will feel valued and you in turn will be blessed. Paul Davis is a traveling minister and author of several books. Fad Diets - Popular Ways to Drop Weight Fast

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Danna Schneider Fad diets are an American tradition. What was all the rage a few months ago is dropped in the proverbial blink of an eye for the latest and greatest way to “easy” and “fast” weightloss. These fads may be a great way to lose about five or ten pounds quickly as an emergency measure, but they can never be a lifetime plan due their extremely restrictive nature, and lack of balance. These types of diets are only good for the short term, and in fact, may make you fatter once you’re off of the plan since they often lead to “rebound over-eating” and yo yo dieting, both of which harm your metabolism by constantly leaving it in a state of confusion. If you are thinking of trying one of these fads, you may want to also try a quality, natural appetite suppressant since most of these diets will leave you in a constant state of hunger. We’ll examine this year’s fad diets. Believe it or not, some of these have actually been circulating for a while and are still a popular diet for quick weight loss - mostly via word of mouth. These diets have aquired somewhat of a mythology about them over time. A person you know probably knows someone or heard stories of someone who lost a drastic amount of weight on them. Popular Fad Diets, Summarized 1.) Cabbage Soup Diet What It Is: You make a cabbage soup concoction consisting of broth, lots of cabbage, onions, celery and a few other acceptable veggies. You consume nothing but this soup for days, or for as long as you can stand it, and get to gradually add in very small amounts of normal food. Why It’s Hard: You may never want to eat soup or look at another carrot or onion again after this diet. Your hunger is never satisfied, because largely what you are consuming is water based, and that is why you can drop weight so quickly - you are not eating anything of real substance. Your stomach is in knots with gas pain and hunger. Bottom line is, this diet is very tough to stick to. When you first try the soup, you think “Hmm, not bad”, but you will soon change your mind. The reward is very rapid weight loss. The problem is, as with all other fad diets, it comes back on just as rapidly if not quicker than it came off when the diet is over. Doctors actually prescribe this diet for patients who need to lose weight quickly for surgery. 2.) The Famous Atkins Diet What It Is: This is basically “The all you can eat - as long as it’s pure protein diet”. This diet gained a huge following almost immediately after Dr. Atkins released the Atkins Diet book to publication, and experienced another resurgence in about 2001 as a quick and easy way to melt the pounds off quickly without sacrificing too much. It attracted quite a bit of criticism due its extreme and unbalanced nature, as well as a concentration on high fat and cholesterol foods, with little fiber and sometimes little nutritional value. The foods it centers around are cheese, bacon, chicken, eggs, turkey, beef and snacks like pork rinds. Although the Atkins diet is extreme in nature, it paved the way for more balanced, heart and health friendly diets such as The Zone Diet and the South Beach Diet (two of my favorites), which preach more of a moderation mentality, balance, and a focus on more healthy, whole and unprocessed foods and a somewhat restricted calorie plan that doesn’t leave you hungry. Why It’s Hard: Your body goes into a state of ketosis due to a lack of carbs and sugars. You get bad breath. You may feel malnourished and weak - a sign of ketosis. The lack of fiber often leads to constipation. When you get hungry, you get HUNGRY! You may never want to look at another egg again in your life, and feel nauseous at the sight of meat. 3.) The All You Can Eat for Seven Days Diet What It Is: You get to choose from one food group each of the seven days. One day may be all chicken, one may be all fruit, and one may be all vegetables, with minimal restrictions on which ones are not allowed. You can eat as much as you want as long as it is within that one food group for each assigned day. Why It’s Hard: Try eating one food group all day. It’s very hard. This diet is almost guaranteed to cause a grumbling belly, since no one food can usually satiate anyone’s appetite or sustain a feeling of fullness for any length of time. Variety is the spice of life, and this applies two-fold to diet boredom and how it leads ot overeating and binges. Once you go off of this diet, you will almost surely gain the weight back, and fast. The problem with diets like this is that they trigger an overeating response due to severe deprivation. 4.) The Snickers Diet What It Is: You get to eat only Snickers candy bars and may drink coffee or water only with this fad diet. I’m actually not sure how many Snickers bars are allowed per day, but do know someone that has a friend who lost over thirty pounds following this diet, but sacrificed her health, her skin and mental well being in the process. Why It’s Hard: The first and most obvious reason this diet is unhealthy is that it is based on a calorie dense, high sugar content food, which leads to: high blood sugar, hunger, terrible skin problems, terrible breath, constipation, immune breakdown, unhealthy heart, loss of mental focus and clarity. There are, of course, many other fad diets that have come and gone, but these are some of the more extreme and interesting ones. While fad diets are tempting to try as a quick fix for drastic and fast weight loss, they should be regarded with caution. Most fad diets lead to larger subsequent weight gains because they are based on deprivation. So, as long as you know what you’re getting going into it, and don’t expect to use it as a long term solution to losing weight or maintaining weight loss, then you’ll be prepared for the outcome. Money Saving Tips for the Smart Shopper

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Kim Hall Most of the secrets for paying less involve planning ahead in when you buy, where you buy,and how you buy. Here’s some ideas to help you started pinching every penny. Food 1. Shop at a “bag your own” grocery store. You can save a bundle shopping at these types of stores. The difference is considerable.Look in the phone book or on the net for stores in your area. 2.Sign up for club cards. They’re usually free and they make you eligible for certain discounts, so why not join? Some stores that have these cards keep tracks of your purchases and when you reach a certain level you’ll get another coupon on top of your savings. 3.Buy meat at the market. Besides fresh meat and terrific prices, at a meat market, you decide the quantity you buy. No prepackaging here.If you want 3/4 pound of ground turkey, that’s what you’ll get. 4. Buy at a bakery outlet. You can buy bread here for around 1/3 of the price than your average grocery store. Also at discount prices are cookies and snack cakes for your grab and go snack. They items you find here are as fresh or beat those at the grocery store. 5. Use those coupons. This is probably the most obvious way to save. Your Sunday paper is normally packed with them. Take that extra five minutes to cut them out. If you’re looking for a specific coupon, try the maker’s website. 6. Look out for after holiday candy clearances. This is normally how my family buys our candy. The first day after a holiday prices typically go down 25-50%. Days following, they’ll reach up to 75%. 7. Join Sam’s Club or Costco. They have membership fees, but they sell just about anything for far less money. Not only do they sell food, but they offer jewelry, clothes, video games, and holiday items as well. Home Products 1.Try a dollar store. Before shopping anywhere else, try the dollar store. Many sell brand name products as low as one dollar. 2.Get creative in looking for coupons. If you can’t find that certain item in Sunday’s paper, call the toll free number on it’s package. Often they’ll send you some coupons just for asking. Don’t forget to search the internet. Try here www.onlycoupons.com. Utilities 1. Are you in a group qualified to pay less? Look into it. You may qualify for lower prices if you are low income, disabled, a veteran, senior citizen, or active in the military. 2.Ask power company about discounts based on income. If you qualify, ask if there’s a program that rebates part of gas and electric bills once a year. These savings can amount up to hundreds of dollars a year. 3. Cable companies sometimes offer discounted services to certain people. Seniors, military, and lower income families may get lower rates. Check websites of local providers or call. 4. Sign up for auto-pay. Ask if there’s a fee waiver for those who have their bill taken directly out of checking accounts. You won’t have to worry about late fees again either. 5. Bundle services together. If you recieve cable and internet from two different providers, find out if you can switch to a plan that combines both for lower rates than when paid seperatly. 6. Eliminate the landline. If you have a cell phone and don’t need it for internet purposes, look into eliminating it altogether. Clothing 1. Shop outlets. In some cases you can save 25-75% than regular department stores. 2. Stock up on staples. Items like socks and undergarments have periodic sales at major discount prices. 3. End of season sales. Long before seasons change, seasonal clothing hits the clearance. New season products come in months ahead, hence the sales. Kids 1. Try Ebay. Be careful because you’re buying from individuals you don’t know. But Ebay offers new toys at discount prices, sometimes much cheaper than in stores.Always check for shipping charges before placing your bid. 2. Timely purchases. Shop early for Christmas toys. Preferrably before Thanksgiving. Research the item online to see where you can find the best offer. Or you can call stores in your area to find out their prices to compare. If it’s a must have, you’ll probably save big bucks if you wait. Automotive 1. Store Connections. Find a gas station that’s part of a grocery store. These places are normally at least several cents cheaper than their competitors. Some also have club cards that let you earn additional cents per gallon when you buy groceries from them. When purchases reach a certain level, another fuel discount is earned. Good thing is, these club cards are most often free. 2. Don’t fill up on Saturdays. In some areas, gas will go up on Saturdays and just before holidays. Planning ahead will come in handy. 3. Avoid freeway gas stations. Gas stations on the exit off the freeway tend to cost more than one a few corners down. They know they’ll catch travelers who don’t want to get to far away from where they are supposed to be. But driving an extra block or two takes little time and gas and can certainly save you plenty. 4. Comparison Shop. Don’t be fooled by those TV commercials that claim they have the cheapest insurance around. There are great companies that do charge signifinantly less, but your driving record as well as credit history factor in on the deal as well. 5. Surcharge waiver program. Ask your insurance if they have this program. If you’ve been accident free for a certain amount of type while insured with them, and then have an accident, your rates won’t increase. 6.Safety and antitheft features. Airbags, anit-lock brakes, factory-installed seatbelts, and daytime running lights not only increase safety for you and your family but may also qualify you for auto insurance discount. Also, most insurers love anti-theft devices. In some states have certain features can allow you to have a 25-35% discount. Healthcare 1. Avoid the E.R. Most of our trips to the emergency room do not require emergency care. But they end up costing us signifigantly more than a regular doctor visit. Check now for any urgent care centers in your area and use them instead whenever possible. You could potentially save up to 70%. 2. Go to health care clinics. Try to avoid shots from your regular doctor. Health clinics normally have a set fee which is very inexpensive. 3. Use Generic Drugs whenever possible. Before leaving the doctor’s office, ask about a generic brand. There is no difference in quality, but there may be a large difference in price. Pets 1. Look for a spay/neuter clinic. Check the yellow pages for a low cost clinic. They typically offer more services, such as shots and other minor procedures. 2. Shop online. Many pet medications such as flea treatment, wormer, and heartworm pills are a great deal less. Remember reputible site will ask for the prescribtion before you can have it filled. Entertainment 1. Shop online at Half.com. There is a wide range of music here. Sellers sell items ranging from acceptable to like new. There is a good chance you’ll get what you expect because sellers strive to keep a good reputation to buyers. 2. Try Ebay. You might find an even better deal because you bid for items. Always check shipping. Some sellers like to raise shipping costs to make more. 3. Join a bookstore discount card program. Every purchase you’ll recieve about 10% off regular price. Some charge a fee, but for avid readers, the fee is well worth it. 4. Check travel discount websites. While you’re at it, book your reservations online to save a few bucks or more. 5. Kids stay/eat free. Most hotels typically don’t charge for children with you. But first check what is considered “kid”. Age limit ranges from 16-19. 6. Frequent stayer programs. If you frequently travel, check the hotel you like to stay at for frequent stayer programs, similar to frequent flier programs. You may earn free nights and other perks. Review on Ad Surf Daily

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Daniel McGonagle Ad Surf Daily started a couple of months ago as a surfing company that with the idea of making a real surfing company that did have a sound structure without saying that you would earn money in a specific period of time like the rest of the surfing companies. Many of the surfing companies say that they will give you your money in seven days or less. The problem is mathematically it is nearly impossible to do what they are saying that they can or will do. Thus, many of the surfing companies have a very short existence and they are also under close scrutiny with the authorities. When it comes to advertising online, there are so many choices and Ad Surf Daily is a new kid on the block and it is working for me. Recommended? Yes, Surfing companies come and go and the ones that are now trying to change the industry and make a solid business that will pay the members to surf will prosper. Ad Surf Daily has made significant progress with a new business model for surfers and advertisers. I personally have known the owner of the company for over ten years and have found him to be ethical, honest, and a visionary with keen business sense. There have been several positive results for my purchase of the ads on Ad Surf Daily: I have increased my ad dollars by surfing and by the referrals that my team has made. Besides that, I have a primary program that I have had new prospects and sales for the product as a result. APR, AER and EAR are Terms Used in Financial Advertising - What do They Mean?

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Challiner]Michael Challiner Have you ever scanned the acres of financial advertising and wondered what APR, AER and EAR really mean? You’ll invariably find one or another of these terms in every advertisement for a lending or savings product. Well you’re certainly not alone. The Financial Services Authority lays down the exact formulas for calculating APR, AER and EAR’s. Every UK financial institution then has to stick by the formulas and the FSA lays down rules as to when and how the figures have to be disclosed. There are no exclusions! Errors invariably result in big fines for the offending company and compensation for any borrower or saver affected. But it’s still no good if the public simply don’t understand what the terms mean. So here’s our bit to lift the mists of misunderstanding! APR is most commonly seen. It stands for annual percentage rate and is used to express the true cost of the money borrowed on credit cards, loans and mortgages. The APR calculation takes account of the basic interest rate, when it is charged (i.e. annually, monthly, weekly or daily), all initial fees and any other costs you are obliged to pay. As lenders all calculate APR the same way, it enables you to make direct cost comparisons between competing lending products. So if one bank is offering you a mortgage at 4.75% plus an arrangement fee of 450 and a building society is offering you an interest rate of 5.1% with a 100 fee, then the APR figures will show you which of the two mortgages is the cheaper. There are then two further expressions you’ll see that include the term APR. X% APR variable means that the borrowing cost is currently X% but the rate of interest is not fixed and is likely to vary (up or down). The second is X% APR Typical variable. You’ll regularly see this expression in loan promotions. It means that the lender cannot be specific about the interest rate you’d be charged as their rates vary, usually in response to your personal credit history and the amount of money you want to borrow. Therefore X% APR Typical variable, is used to provide a general impression of the interest rate you can expect to be offered. The addition of the word Typical means that at least two thirds of applications that the advertiser approves are at that APR or cheaper . Then if a loan is offered to you, the paperwork will reveal the actual APR or APR variable you are being offered. Now lets turn our attention to EAR. EAR is the abbreviation for equivalent annual rate. It’s used to demonstrate the full percentage cost of overdrafts and accounts that can be in credit and also go overdrawn. The calculation accurately illustrates the cost of the overdraft facility. In common with the APR calculation, EAR takes into account of the basic rate of interest charged, when the interest is charged, plus any additional charges. So in most respects EAR and APR do the same thing it’s just that APR applies to pure lending products whilst EAR applies to a product, such as a banking current account, that can be held in credit or go overdrawn. Incidentally, the EAR and APR figures always exclude any Payment Protection Insurance you’ve bought to guarantee that the monthly repayments will be maintained if you’re off work due to accident, sickness or unemployment. That’s because this insurance is always an optional extra and is never a condition of the lending. AER on the other hand is only used in relation to savings and interest based investments. It’s concerned with the rate of interest you’ll receive on your money. AER is short for annual equivalent rate. It shows the adjusted rate of interest you’ll receive at the end of a twelve-month period taking into account the regularity of which interest is credited to the account. (This is necessary as the frequency of payment has a compounding affect on the amount of interest you actually receive). The formula for AER also removes the affect of any promotional offer that disappears after a few months a popular ploy used by financial institutions to send their savings products to the top of the Best Buy lists. You’ll probably forget most of this as it’s yawningly boring but we hope we’ve shed light on some of the most important financial jargon you’re faced with! How Judgment Recovery Works for You

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Bob Sherman You (the plaintiff) brought a small claims or civil suit against a debtor (the defendant) and were awarded a judgment. You, as the judgment creditor (winner) have a right to judgment recovery from the judgment debtor (loser). But, the judgment is merely a piece of paper filed in the courthouse. It is delivered to both your and the debtor. But the court completed it’s job after deciding your case. It takes no enforcement action. How do you enforce the judgment to ensure the judgment recovery is complete? The first thing to do is to discuss payment with the debtor. Money judgment recovery payments are sometimes made on the day of the court hearing or over a period of time. If you do not receive the money that you are owed, the court and court officials can assist you in several ways to complete the judgment recovery. === Judgment Recovery Through Public Sale === An “execution” allows a court officer to seize property belonging to the defendant which can be sold to pay your judgment. You are responsible for identifying the debtors personal property that can be used to help fulfill your judgment recovery. Court officials can seize these items and offer them at a public sale. Items such as office equipment (computers) and automobiles are typical items court officials can seize. You can also file a petition with the court indicating the amount the debtor owes you and request the court to issue an order for discovery of assets. This order can be issued to anyone who has knowledge regarding the assets of the debtor. === Judgment Recovery Through Seizure of Bank Assets === You must determine where the debtor’s savings or checking accounts are located and the account numbers, if possible. The court official can levy or freeze these accounts. Once frozen, you must then file a motion with the court for the funds to be turned over to you. Once this motion is granted, the court officer will deliver the order to the bank and the funds can be released to you. If you are unable to locate the debtor’s bank, you can obtain an information subpoena from the court that contains questions about the debtor’s assets. You can then serve (deliver) the information subpoena to the debtor. The debtor must answer and return the information subpoena. === Judgment Recovery Through Wage Garnishment === A garnishment allows you to collect your judgment by garnishing the defendant’s wages, bank accounts, or other sources such as income tax refunds. You must identify the debtor’s place of employment and send a notice to the debtor requesting garnishment of wages. If the debtor agrees (or disagrees and the court so orders) a notice of wage execution is delivered to the employer by the court officer. The employer will withhold the specified amount and send it to the court officer who will then send it to you. === Interest on a Judgment Until Recovery is Complete === When you receive a money judgment you are normally entitled to add interest to the unpaid balance until the recovery is complete. The interest rate is typically set by the state legislature or the state’s department of treasury. For example, in Michigan the interest rate defined by the Department of Treasury is “calculated from the date of filing the complaint at a rate of interest which is equal to 1% plus the average interest rate paid at auctions of 5-year United States treasury notes during the 6 months immediately preceding July 1 and January 1, as certified by the state treasurer, and compounded annually.” So, your unsatisfied judgment is probably becoming more valuable as it ages. === Problems With Completing Judgment Recovery === Debtors often try to evade attempts to collect judgments. There are standard tactics debtors use to elude collection such as: - Hiding assets and bank accounts - Fraudulent conveyance of assets - Moving to another state - Moving to another area within the same state - Changing their name Because most judgment creditors lack knowledge in tracking down the debtor, locating assets, and knowing how to collect, it is estimated that 80% of all judgments go uncollected. Most people understand that hiring an attorney at $100 to $200 an hour will quickly eat up their judgment award, so they do nothing. You can, however, do everything necessary to collect your judgment award if you are willing to learn. There are judgment recovery courses in the $100 to $200 range, complete with online resources, that will teach you everything you need to know. Do a search for “judgment recovery” to find a number of sites offering these courses. Though they often advertise that you can make money helping others, you can also simply use the knowledge to recover your own money judgment. How to Care For Your Roses

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Paul Guzman Caring for your Roses Roses like lots of water after planting them, they love rich loamy soil so be sure to use good soil amendments during planting. Be careful not to use compost with a high fertilizer content, sometimes this could burn the roots during plantings. Blooming problems are usually due to not enough phosphorus in your soil. Be sure to use a rose food fertilizer that has a high phosporus number. Most rose fertilizers have 3 numbers printed across the bag. The first number is for nitrogen which makes most roses and plants green. The second number is for phosphorus which helps in flower development and blooms. And the third number is for potassium which is for cold hardiness and photosynthesis or in other words more blooms and proper nutrition flow. If roses still do not bloom you could have an insect problem. It is best to use a systemic insectcide to get rid of these insects. Call or consult your local nursery for further information. You should fertilize your roses at least 3 times per year, once in spring, summer and early fall. Never fertilize in late fall or winter. Their are many “types” of roses. Hybrid Tea and Grandiflora rose-They are large elegant blooms on long straight stems ideal for cutting. Floribunda-A busy rose with clustered bloom habit. English Rose-These roses have full double blooms of old roses with repeated flowering-ideal for landscaping. Climbing Rose-The climbing rose is named for the climbing habit, they grow best along trellises or arbors. Hedge Rose-Used for low maintenance fencing along property lines. Shrub Rose-They are known for there trouble free and easy to grow maintenance. Miniature-Roses Miniatures roses are grown in containers and used for landscaping in smaller areas. Tree Rose-Excellent for the patio or around large statuary and pond areas.
