The Curse of Work

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Mark J The next time you say that your job is killing you, you may just be on to something. The UK currently has the longest average working week in Europe and there is mounting evidence that overwork is taking its toll on the British workforce. For example: Approximately 106 million working days are lost through back pain, costing the UK economy 5.2 billion. Approximately 90 million working days are lost across the UK as a result of stress-related absence. Stress experts state that consistently working more than 45 hours a week can damage your health, physically and psychologically. The irony of us becoming a nation of workaholics is that in long term it has adverse effects on businesses. Recent research has indicated that lower and not higher working hours relate directly to higher productivity. One of the sacrifices of over-working is that less time is devoted to leisure or recreational activities, the very thing that can combat stress and give increased welfare that would allow us to work harder and for longer. One such leisure activity is exercise. The benefits of exercise are long established. It has a direct effect on preventing or helping a range of illnesses including diabetes, heart disease and osteoarthritis. For the young it is an important means in helping build healthy bones, muscles, and joints. For the old it is a vital means in reducing the risk of major illness and premature death. For everyone in between, regular activity reduces the risk of disease, controls weight gain, slows ageing and increases psychological well-being. For those who prefer activities a little more daring than an hour on the treadmill, there are a range of extreme sports and activities that are a fantastic means of expelling all that pent up work-related stress. An extreme sport is any activity that has an element of danger attached to it. Apart from the risk element, many of these sports have a positive effect on your well-being and are great for shaping up physically. So what is stopping us? There are countless organisations and clubs out there with ideas and activities from the easy to the extreme. All of us need to find the time to relax and unwind after a long days work. We live in such a fast paced society. Our world is one filled with endless tasks and demands. If we are feeling overwhelmed with too much stress and pressure, we will not be able to cope with all that life presents before us. These factors make it extremely important for all of us to find time for leisure. Dangerous Distractions

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Vivian Gordon Stores begin an all out campaign for our money by alluring us in and inticing us to sales, all competing with eachother. This turns into a distraction. But, actually these stores know exactly what they are doing. Distractions are just that, they get us off track from our original plans and being in the world, this is the precise plan of the enemy who wishes to destroy the beauty of this holiday. These distractions are taking away the Peace, Love and Joy that it is meant to give us. I recently heard a report that most of the charged credit on peoples’ charge cards come from over spending at this time of year. First of all, if you know anything about God’s Word, He never meant for us to be the borrow, but instead the lender. God makes it very clear that we are not to be in debt to anyone but Him and it’s not about the money! But this “secular” mentality in giving is also not Biblical. Jesus Himself even said if you give to those whom you already love, what is it proving? And even at that, our motives aren’t always one of love. We have many reasons for buying gifts for people. Sometimes to make ourselves look good, other times it’s a feeling of obligation because that other person always gets us something, and it wouldn’t look good if we didn’t reciprocate. We could overspend justifying that it may show someone how much we love them. Whatever the reason, they are all wrong and out of whack. We are a materialistic bunch of people due to the distractions from the world. Satan is more active at this time of year I believe than any other, and when we are walking in darkness, of course we aren’t going to even recognize this fact. The great news is that when we follow Christ, we don’t have to follow the lead from the world and become victims. We can give from our hearts (at no cost) to those who truly need something, not merely because they want something and we don’t look for anything in return. That’s the true meaning of Christmas. God teaches us through His Son Christ, that we are walking in the Light. Unless we learn to stand up for the Truth, we will fall for all the lies. Jesus set an example when things and people of this world are trying to get our attention off the things of God. Let’s take a look at what Jesus did in this situation. In the book of Mark, it begins in the 5th chapter, verse 22. Jesus had just crossed over the water in the boat with His disciples and as He stepped out, there was a large crowd waiting for Him. Among them, was a religious man named Jarius. He approached Jesus and fell before His feet. He begged the Master to come to his house and save his daughter who was dying. Jesus agreeing, started out on this mission when suddenly He felt His power had gone out of from Him. Not realizing who had touched Him, He took a minute to stop and ask. Even though the woman with the blood issue had great faith, Satan will always use this to distract us from what we are about to receive from God. Maybe this distraction was being used by Satan to do evil when Jesus meant to do it for the good of the kingdom. We already know that Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy our blessings. In Mark 5:35; it says that while Jesus was still speaking, news had come of the death of Jairus’ daughter. When we get distracted, Satan comes in for the kill. So, naturally, we feel all is lost. There are many times when we are getting quiet with Jesus and the distractions come. The phone will ring, the kids will start acting up, the dog will start barking. Whatever it may be, it causes our focus to be broken and instant distractions flood in, and now Jesus is put on the back burner. Now let’s look at how Jesus handled this distraction. In Mark 5:36, Jesus heard what was being said, but did He let it get Him flustered? No, on the contrary, He reacted by not over reacting, in fact He totally ignored them. Why then can’t we do the same when we get bad news and become distracted? When you can stand up to these distractions, and focus on on Jesus, you will be able to stand up in all situations. Like Jesus, He knew He had His Father’s business to attend to and wasn’t going to let anything interfere with that plan. We also have business to attend to and can’t afford to get distracted, it means life or death for us also. Jesus didn’t follow this trick to become distracted, why then do we? In the next verse (Mark 5:40), it says that Jesus arrived at Jarius’ house. He told the people that this little girl was not dead but only sleeping and their first reaction was to laugh and jeer at Him. “Boy, who is this guy? He must be nuts.” Upon seeing their doubt, Jesus ordered all of them to leave, except for those who had faith. You see, when we doubt God, He can’t work in our lives, it cancels out our faith. So, Jesus had to remove the doubt in order to receive God’s blessing. Even when things seem impossible, remember that with man they are! But with God ALL things are possible. So, don’t let people interfere with your focus because of their unbelief. Paul the Apostle was very familiar with all these same feelings but he told us all how to overcome our human nature and desires. “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” Hb. 12:1 ( KJV) Paul is telling us that sin is a great weight that easily throws us off track, but as witnesses to Christ, we must, we have to turn from distractions with patience and keep going because it’s our goal. “Looking unto Jesus the aurthor and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame; and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hb. 12:2 (KJV) Just as Jesus focused on His goal, which was to demonish sin once and for all, He remained joyful, because that is our strength from God. We have to learn to do our part and then let God do His part because He will handle it. He is the only One who can change people and situations, not us. Let go and let God! Joshua gave us advice on just how we should accomplish this kind of focus when God told him this: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make they way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Josh. 1:8 (KJV) Just as in Joshua’s time, we are not to forget God’s Word either. This Truth should never leave us and in order to remember it, we must meditate on it, give it careful thought and understand it day and night. Then after we have done this, we must observe it and do it! Are we making a conscious effort to do this? If not, why not? Could distractions be the problem? Because God said, that in doing so, we will have good success and prosper. Lastly, I want to take a quick look at two women who show us the advantages of being focused and the disadvantages of being distracted. Do you see yourself in either of them? This story begins in Luke 10:38, where Jesus went to the home of Mary and Martha. Mary instantly seated herself at Jesus’ feet and listened to Him teach, while Martha was too busy (Being Under Satan’s Yoke) to slow down and listen. Her hostessing duties took priority. She resented Mary for being so calm and content. You’ve heard how misery loves company. Well, Martha asked Jesus to correct her sister for her laziness, but instead, Jesus said this to her. “Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things. There is need of only one or but a few things, Mary has chosen the good portion (that which is to her advantage) which shall not be taken away from her.” Lk. 10:42-42 (Amplified) Jesus gently, but firmly put Martha in her place. Same goes for us today. As long as we remain focused on Jesus, which is to our advantage, then the joy of the Lord becomes our strength to avoid the foolish cares of the world. And as we get distracted, He will gently tug at our conscious to let us know that He is the Way. Ask yourself today, are you truly joyous or are there distractions that may be holding you back from your blessings that God has for you? Before you anxiously look at the sales coupons for the best buys and sales, consider looking into redeeming the best coupon ever offered - your eternal salvation. This one will never expire! If all these distractions got you feeling down, try looking up. Vivian Gordon is called by God to teach and write for His glory. Enhancing Communication in Marriage

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Nancy Wasson In marriages, many arguments and hurt feelings can be traced back to communication problems. It’s not unusual for spouses to stay in a continual state of frustration, feeling misunderstood and unappreciated. Unexpressed feelings can pile up and poison the relationship. When you repress your anger, it will always come out later, usually after something minor has upset you. You may find that it’s difficult to have a complete conversation without you or your spouse leaving the room before the conflict is resolved. The emotional buttons that your spouse pushes in you can make you want to bolt and get away from your uncomfortable feelings and reactions. Learning to communicate more effectively with your spouse requires that you be fully present and attentive. You have to be committed to really listening and hearing, not only with your ears but also with your heart. You want to eliminate any communication blocks that prevent you and your partner from growing in understanding and intimacy. Communication blocks are anything that you do, verbally or non-verbally, to keep you from connecting deeply with another person. Some examples of communication blocks in marriage are: * Rolling your eyes and looking resigned or exasperated when your spouse is talking; * Sighing deeply and loudly when your spouse is sharing his/her viewpoint; * Looking at your watch or a clock repeatedly; * Not stopping what you’re doing when your spouse is trying to have a serious talk with you; * Not making eye contact and not giving your partner your undivided attention; * Using the time when your spouse is talking to think about other things unrelated to the conversation; * Tuning your spouse out because you’ve heard the same thing repeatedly and are convinced it’s the same old speech; * Becoming defensive and angry immediately instead of showing your partner the respect of hearing him/her out; * Belittling your spouse, name calling, cursing, shaking or pointing a finger, or getting in his/ her face. * Interrupting your partner before he/she is finished talking. It has been said that for every minute you are angry with someone, you lose sixty seconds of happiness that you can never get back. It just makes good sense to do everything you can to preserve the good will and intimacy of your marriage when conflict, anger, hurt feelings, and disagreements occur. If you truly love your partner, you will not want to rip him/her to shreds verbally, or to ignore or discount differing opinions and beliefs. You will want to do everything you can to insure that you have quality communication in your relationship and that you are communicating your caring, love, and respect to your spouse Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The most important thing in any relationship is not what you get but what you give.” While you cannot control how someone else will react to your efforts, you can commit to doing all you can to create a safe environment where intimacy can flourish. —————————————————————- Nancy J. Japanese Food - Five Dishes for Newcomers

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Michael Russell Japanese food, once little more than a niche occupant in the greater scope of American cuisine, has become increasingly popular in recent years. The harmony of flavors and lightness emphasized in the typical Japanese dish appeals to the palettes of many in the United States, where heavy and often deep fried foods have long dominated the market. Many people remain reluctant about exploring this aspect of ethnic cuisine, however, for fear that they’ll find something on their plate which appears as though it came from the Iron Chef. This is far from the truth! The intent of this article is to introduce readers to a variety of different Japanese dishes, that they might go out and try something new without fear of what they’ll be eating. Domburi: This dish is quite simply a bowl of rice adorned with some sort of topping. A variety of toppings are popular in Japan, many of which have successfully migrated across the Pacific and into American restaurants. One example of this dish is oyakodon, which uses both chicken and egg for its topping. Another sort of domburi, gyudon, is beefy in flavor and more popular in Japan as fast food. Those of you who are especially outgoing tasters might like to sample unadon, a type of domburi wherein strips of grilled eel coated in a thick soya sauce are used to top the rice bowl. Ramen: This soup dish has been a staple of the American college student’s diet for years. Wildly popular around the world, ramen is to the Japanese what a burger and fries are to your average United States native. Ramen comes in a variety of bases and is best recognized for its long, slender noodles. Complimenting these noodles are such ingredients as dumplings, pork, miso (fermented soybeans) and soya sauce. It’s interesting to note that ramen originated in China, rather than Japan, but the dish is almost always associated with the latter source nowadays. Sashimi: This dish is often mistaken for sushi by those still new to the realm of Japanese cuisine. Although it is often presented artistically, the fact remains that sashimi is raw fish, a truth which turns the stomach of many a squeamish American. Several types of sashimi are served, the most popular of which is probably tuna. Diners should be lend particular attention to the scent when partaking of this dish. The fish used to prepare sashimi must be exceptionally fresh and as such, it should be devoid of any fishy scent. Sushi: Perhaps the most well-recognized of all Japanese dishes, sushi has become particularly popular in trendy regions of the United States. It is served in too many variations to list completely in the space of this article. To be considered sushi, however, the dish must contain rice that has been prepared with sushi vinegar. The most recognized form of sushi is probably norimaki, or sushi rolls. These rolls contain sushi rice and various sorts of seafood rolled in sheets of dried seaweed. Norimaki often includes vegetables, as well. Tempura: This dish has also become quite popular within Japan and across the globe. Tempura is something of a finger food, consisting of differing types of seafood and/or vegetables fried in a special batter. The end result is a delightful treat which is crisp without being heavy, as is often the case with deep fried cuisine in America. The ingredients featured in tempura are too numerous to possibly list and often vary wildly from one restaurant to the next. The five dishes listed above should provide the novice gourmand with a particularly tasty introduction to the world of Japanese cuisine. Enjoy! Weight Loss Success - A Nutritionist’s 10 BEST Tips

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Lori Pirog You’ve heard it before, possibly more times than you care to remember. To lose weight simply eat less and exercise more. The problem is there could be nothing further from the truth. The concept is true–eat less and exercise more–but there is nothing simple about weight loss! Don’t let anyone try to convince you otherwise. I could spend hours, no maybe days or weeks explaining why it is difficult. However, I imagine that isn’t necessary because you already know just how hard it can be. What’s worse is that losing the weight is only half the battle. Keeping the weight off can be even more difficult! However, there is a secret to successful weight loss. Unfortunately, many people who learn this secret fail to recognize its power. Instead they are like those who seek a get-rich-quick scheme. They are easy targets for the next clever marketer who promises to reveal how to lose weight fast without a proper diet or exercise! 1. The secret or single most important concept to keep in mind for successful long-term weight loss has been well proven. You must choose a healthy diet and lifestyle that you can maintain for the rest of your life. That’s it. Did you know that the true meaning of a diet is simply what you eat? You are already on a diet of your own choosing whether you think of it that way or not. The good news is that you have control over what you select for your diet. And every day offers you an opportunity to make small changes to improve. Small changes maintained over time can result in significant results–weight loss, looking better, feeling better, and reduced risk for illness and disease. The remaining 9 tips will teach you what you need to keep in mind when making changes to your diet. 2. Choose to eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans. The benefits of these choices are enormous! These foods are chock full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and healthy phytochemicals. Vitamins and minerals work overtime to keep your body functioning properly. Fiber adds bulk to the food you eat, gives you a sense of fullness and satisfaction, and keeps your digestive system working smoothly. Phytochemicals are the new kids on the block. They are the source of healthy antioxidants and other compounds that benefit us in a multitude of ways scientists have only begun to discover. Add a small amount of lean meat and fish, and low-fat milk products to round out and balance your diet. But give emphasis to the fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. 3. Eat fewer refined carbohydrates. Yes, this means cutting back or eliminating sweets and refined breads and cereals. Instead choose to eat whole grains whenever possible. Look for whole grain listed first on the ingredient list and products with more than two grams of fiber per serving. Four or more grams per serving are better. 4. Drink lots of water! Six to eight glasses of water are best. Tea and a small amount of fruit juice can be a source of some of that water. Reduce or eliminate your consumption of additional fruit juice, sugary drinks, or alcoholic beverages. 5. Avoid highly processed foods with added sugars, artificial sweeteners or excessive fat. Many low-fat cookies, cakes, chips, crackers, and desserts are high in refined carbohydrates and calories and have little or no fiber. 6. Determine how many calories you actually need. Be realistic! Calculate your basal metabolic rate and calculate the additional energy (calories) you need for daily activities. Most women need a minimum of 1200 calories and men 1600 calories a day to prevent their metabolism from slowing down. 7. Keep a food diary to keep track of your food choices and count calories at least for a week or two. Putting in the time and effort to do this may not be fun. But the benefits are HUGE. You will likely gain some essential insight about your current food habits and what you need to do to change. 8. Learn what triggers you to overeat. Jot some notes in your food diary each time you reach for food. Were you actually hungry or were you eating just because the food was there and you could? Was the food a reward or means of soothing your anger or frustration after a difficult day? The key here is having an understanding of what you are feeling before you eat. This gives you the option to make a different choice. 9. Get support! Whatever the challenge you might be facing, having family or friends who are supportive is a big help! However, be aware of those who may want you to stay just as you are and instead of helping actually sabotage your efforts. 10. Exercise! What can I say? Exercise matters! Be creative and find a form of exercise that you will like. Take these suggestions to heart. Make one small change at a time. Added up the changes you make with your diet and lifestyle could mean significant weight loss and better health for years to come! Want more weight loss tips and strategies? Starting A Beauty Salon

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Kent Pinkerton Many individuals may venture into starting their own beauty salon, as it is considered a lucrative business. To start a beauty salon many things have to be kept in mind, such as the budget, the neighborhood, the personnel required, the quality and quantity of equipment, the charge lists of the services, and much more. Individuals aspiring to open and operate a beauty salon can either build anew or lease an existing one. They require conducting through research and studying the different aspects of a salon business. A ready business plan should be at hand for them to put it into action. Since, a lot of capital investment is at stake, individuals need to conduct market surveys and study the locality extensively where they are going to buy the property. They also need to carry out a comparative study of the necessary salon equipment prices before making the purchase. The indispensable pieces of salon equipment are the chairs, hair styling equipment, manicure and pedicure sets, washbasins, hair dryers, mirrors and customized styling stations to name a few. Some individuals may choose to buy from reputed retailers. The overall ambience of a salon plays a major role in determining the type of equipment and the services that will be required and catered to, in the salon. Many stores may also offer cheap discounts on salon equipment, which provides salon owners the chance to furnish their salons with the latest contemporary equipment. A variety of discount equipment is available for bulk purchases. Individuals may prefer to buy equipment in extra quantity, as this eliminates the chances of running out of equipment and makes the bargain economical. Salon furniture is also purchased to enhance the look and add a touch of professionalism to the premises. The chosen equipment should be able to provide the necessary services, without encroaching on the space. A salon may begin only with beauty care services such as make up, face cleaning, haircuts, threading and facials. After awhile, the salon owners may expand their business by adding spa services, manicures, and pedicures to the list. The Making of a Slipcover: A Lost Art

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Robin Hall Today in this world of fast everything, most of us just don’t have the time (nor patience) to do an all consuming job of making a slipcover. We go buy them and not always are they what we want. They are generic in most cases and just don’t work on the furniture right or look professional. If you can find the time and feel creative, you can produce a masterpiece for an old (or new) piece of furniture that needs a change to correspond with a new room update. The slipcover will produce a sense of confirmation and beauty for “you”, the person doing the work. A job well done is always good for growing self- confidence and character! I owned a very busy tailor shop and I was use to “custom fitting” my clients and worked the slipcovers the same way. When one was finished, it was hard to tell if the piece had been re-upholstered or slip covered. What a great feeling it was to see the finished piece! So with that said, I have a few techniques for you to use that will make this lost art of slipcover making a bit easier. Start with a simple furniture piece. A good example would be an ottoman, simple dining chair or a toaster! Look at the piece, see where the natural lines are? That is where the seams will be for the slipcover. Scratch out a picture of your furniture piece, this will help as you take measurements for pieces. Measure width and length, add an extra 1″ to width and length for seams. Write each piece size down on drawing to reference from. Make sure you have your closure type figured out. You will need to add extra material for overlapping if using velcro or ties and zippers. Where will your closures be? Do you even need one on this slip cover? All of this needs to be calculated into original diagram of furniture piece. We will tailor fit these pieces to the furniture INSIDE OUT. You will end up with all your slipcover pieces being odd sized squares or rectangles, etc. This is easier for quick marking and cutting instead of attempting to cut the exact shape of each piece. There will be some extra material in certain areas (which you will cut away) but it gives you room for making a few mistakes! Remember, the art of slip covers and upholstery is very forgiving! If you are using denim or heavy cotton or anything that does not have to be dry-cleaned for your slipcover, I suggest you preshrink the material. You can wash and dry it later many times without shrinkage (a great option if you have small children and newer furniture). Choose a solid color. Sheets or curtains (even older ones found at Goodwill if you’re on a budget) can work for making slipcovers and you may find them on sale to make the cost less. Cording can be covered and added into prominent seams of the slipcover if you want to add some detail. Most of your material to cover cording with will come from the leftover inches at the sides going along the length. They will be long pieces sewn together on a mitered seam. Cording material width is 1 “. Cutting everything with pinking scissors will eliminate (to a certain degree) having to serge or finish the edge of raveling fabric. You will “railroad” your slipcover measurements by marking them (and eventually cutting), going length wise on fabric and then side by side across the width of fabric. If you have an exceptionally wide piece you will “railroad” it going length of material instead of across, thus avoiding seams. Visualize how the sizes will lay out on the fabric, using drawings here will be very helpful. Example: If you use 60″ width material, you will get at least 3 dining chair slipcover backs across, if they are 16″ 18″ wide. They could run 36″ 48″ in length down the material. Then you will need to figure the inside back, seat, and sides or skirting (remember, if you are doing 2 or more of same, times each piece by the number you are doing). Depending on how much turn up you want for the hem will depend on how much extra you add on side or skirting measurement. Figure out how much material you will need by calculating the length of longest slipcover pieces, adding them together and divide by 36″ for yardage. Make sure to utilize the most from your fabric. There are cheat sheets at some material stores that give basic yardage for upholstering & slip covering furniture , see if you can find one, their priceless! Once you have all your measurements for your slip cover pieces, start with the largest sizes and mark everything out on your fabric, WRONG SIDE. You will need a yardstick or longer, measuring tool. A large square is good to have also. (Any hardware store should carry the tools) Label all pieces; i.e. back back, front back, seat, sides or skirting, etc. Cut your pieces. Holding your slipcover pieces up to the furniture piece INSIDE OUT, pin the seams together about every 2 inches lengthwise along the seam. Make sure to center your pieces over furniture so you have equal seam allowance on sides, edges, etc. Back-back to front-back, pin. Seat to front-back, pin and so on. Sew these pieces together. Once you start sewing, your seams will only be about 3/8″ instead of the full 5/8″. This gives the slipcover a tiny bit of room to move when finished. I recommend getting some T-pins to use when you are making slipcovers for larger upholstered pieces, you can stick them into the furniture and they will hold the slipcover fabric in place when fitting the pieces together. Normally, I will pin fit the whole slipcover together inside out on the furniture piece, then go sew, removing pins along the way. This is similar to a puzzle, make sure to sew all seams that dead end into other seams first. Once you have it sewn together, turn it right side out and fit it. Check for areas that may be a bit off and correct. From experience I can tell you it is usually pretty good if you can sew a straight seam. You can put some masking tape on your sewing machine face plate and mark 3/8″ over from the needle to help with this. Complete all finishing touches, stand back and take a picture! This is a wonderful way to grow patience, skill and redecorate for less. There is time involved, but you will have a great sense of accomplishing a lost art! Have fun! There is more to this than what I have here, but you should be able to get a pretty good idea of what to do and how. There are some very good books you can get from your public library and material/craft stores to help you and I would be happy to help, if you mail me at the address below. After enrolling you will typically be given easy-to-use Internet access software to facilitate quick and smooth retrieval of lectures, questions, and assignments. Since there are no time schedules and frames, the instruction material can be downloaded anytime and reviewed offline at your convenience. Online research libraries and services are available from the university to cater to the students research requirements. The programs are designed to fit in interaction with other students and professionals from the field. This helps the students enrich their assignments before they discuss it in an academic environment with their instructors. Instructors also guide the students through the courses to avoid any learning hitches. Although this multi-interaction offline scenario enriches the students learning experience, the spontaneous classroom scenario is missing in an online course. For some students, the class interaction could be more invigorating than learning online. However, an online program offers you almost unlimited flexibility. Each course is completed over five to six weeks and students can take breaks between courses. Since the interaction is asynchronous, as in email messages, there are no schedules or fixed timings for classes either. A student doesnt have to rush from work to meet a class time. Whereas this could also serve as a demotivator for certain students who perform better under strict schedules and timetables, it is advantageous for people with hectic work environments, and for people who can exert self-discipline in setting an effective timetable. Know the Difference Between a Tulip Bulb and a Seed

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Dave Pipitone Many people want to know the difference between a tulip bulb and a seed. Is there a difference between growing a tulip from a seed or from a bulb? How does a bulb differ from a seed, like a sunflower seed? Let’s start with the basic definition of an ordinary flower bulb. There are many different definitions you can find on gardening websites. Here are two similar, but different definitions: An underground leaf bud wrapped in fleshy scales or coats. An underground storage organ made up of fleshy scales wrapped around each other from which flowers and leaves are produced. Let’s pull out the common elements. A tulip bulb is the bottom part of a tulip plant. When the bulb is planted in the soil and begins to come to life, roots and shoots break through the outer wall. Roots dig deeper into the soil to collect water and nutrients. Shoots grow upward and break through the surface of the soil and grow into the green plant that bears a tulip flower. A bulb is a “storage organ.” It stores food in the “fleshy scales” around the “core” of the bulb. That core grows into next year’s plant. According to Wikipedia, a seed is a small embryonic plant enclosed in a covering called the seed coat, usually with some stored food. The seed coat is a hard case that protects the tiny plant inside. Seeds grow inside a flower or fruit. A seed can be harvested, cleaned, dried and planted to grow new flowers and plants. Tulip flowers have tulip seeds within the seed pod. You can harvest a seed from a pollinated tulip flower pod and plant it. Just be prepared to wait a long time for a flower to grow. A number of gardening sources say that it can take five-to-seven years before a tulip plant from seed will form a flower. That is different from a tulip bulb, which will produce a tulip plant and flower the very next year. When planted and nurtured in right soil, of course. A seed can be as tiny as a poppy seed or as large as a peach pit. The biggest seed in the plant kingdom is from a coco de mer palm tree found in the Silhouette Islands in the Seychelles. That seed can weigh up to 17.6 kilograms or 38 pounds! Tulip bulbs are very large compared to most flower seeds. A tulip bulb is measured by its circumference. A typical tulip bulb is 11-12 centimeters in circumference which translates to 1.5 inches in diameter. An average tulip bulb measures between 1.5 inches and 3 inches long. A huge difference between a tulip bulb and a seed is where and how they grow. You will find seeds growing at the fruitful part of a plant - at the end of a branch, in the flower or buried in the fruit. Bulbs are underground at the very start of the plant. Tulip bulbs aren’t produced like seeds; they multiply by dividing into two or more bulbs that attach to each other underground, below the surface of the soil. Adore Your Mate

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Julia Jones Love, care, attraction and affection are what come to our mind when we talk about a relationship. Well a relationship is much more than that. It is admiring and adoring your mate, adoring beyond the physical appearance. A relationship is about two individuals coming together in union for an everlasting bond. It is accepting one another with all their positive and negative aspect. When you are in a relationship you should adore your mate for what he or she is. Adoring your mate is appreciating the complete persona of a particular person. A relationship is accepting a person for what they are, all the good and bad qualities. You have to accept the person for his or her flaws. That is a true relationship. Most of the relationships in todays world end in a separation due to lack of adjustment and acceptance for each other. Many couples are unable to cope up with the faults of their partners. They only admire them for their good qualities and reject them for their negative characteristics. Should it be the way, certainly not? We should remember that no person is perfect. If people are good at certain things and have some positive traits they also have negative qualities. We should learn to accept and acknowledge both the positive and negative points of our partners. This is true love. If you really love your mate you are going to love him or her for each and every quality he or she has. Most of us come into a relationship when we get acquainted to a persons positive attribute which is very normal. But it is in later years that we come to know about a persons negative trait. It is here we need to understand that no person is perfect and should take that person as he or she is. None of us are perfect. You should keep in mind that you too have faults and are being accepted as you are. So why cant you be the same. If you feel it difficult to take in the bad part of your partner just keep in mind the good part about him or her. And it will become very easy for you to take in the unpleasant portion of the relationship.
