Separate Colors in a Fall Leaf Using Chromatography

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Chris Yates Fall is a beautiful time of year with all the leaves are changing colors. Children wonder why it happens, so it’s a great opportunity to use the power of science to show them the separate leaf colors and to explain how the leaves actually change colors. What you need: - Leaves that have changed color - Small jar (baby food jars are the best) - Lid for the jar (aluminum foil or plastic wrap if you don’t have a lid) - Rubbing alcohol - Paper coffee filter - A shallow pan or tray - Hot water - Tape - A pen - Plastic knife or spoon - A timer What you do: NOTE: Adult supervision is required for this activity. Please read all instructions completely before starting. Observe all safety precautions. 1. Collect two or three fairly large leaves. Tear or chop them up and put them into a jar. 2. Add rubbing alcohol to the jar so that you completely cover the chopped up leaves. Use the plastic knife or spoon to grind the leaves into the alcohol and break them up. NOTE: Rubbing alcohol can be dangerous if mishandled or misused. Please read and follow all warnings on the rubbing alcohol bottle. 3. Loosely cover the jar with the lid (aluminum foil or plastic wrap). Fill the shallow pan with about an inch of hot water and carefully place the jar into the pan. Gently swirl the jar every five minutes and replace the hot water as it cools off. 4. Leave the jar in the water for at least half an hour or until the alcohol becomes colored. The deeper the color of the alcohol the better. 5. While you’re waiting, cut a long strip of coffee filter paper. When the jar is ready, remove it from the water and uncover it. Put the strip of coffee filter paper into the jar so that one end is in the alcohol and the other end is outside the jar. Secure the dry end with a piece of tape to the outside of the jar. 6. The colored alcohol will travel up the paper. If you leave the paper in the alcohol for about 90 minutes or so, each color of chlorophyll (as well as other “color” chemicals) will travel a different distance up the paper as the alcohol evaporates. You should be able to see different shades of green, yellow, orange, red, etc, depending on the color and type of leaves you’re using. 7. Remove the strip of paper and let it dry by taping it to a plain piece of paper. Why the Leaves Change Color During summer, the leaves of trees are factories producing sugar from carbon dioxide and water by the action of light on chlorophyll. Chlorophyll causes the leaves to appear green. Water and nutrients flow from the roots, through the branches, and into the leaves. The sugars produced by photosynthesis flow from the leaves to other parts of the tree, where some of the chemical energy is used for growth and some is stored. The shortening days and cool nights of autumn trigger changes in the tree. One of these changes is the growth of a corky membrane between the branch and the leaf stem. This membrane interferes with the flow of nutrients into the leaf. Because the nutrient flow is interrupted, the production of chlorophyll in the leaf declines, and the green color of the leaf fades. If the leaf contains carotene, as do the leaves of birch and hickory, it will change from green to bright yellow as the chlorophyll disappears. In some trees, as the concentration of sugar in the leaf increases, the sugar reacts to form anthocyanins. These pigments cause the yellowing leaves to turn red. Red maples, red oaks, and sumac produce anthocyanins in abundance and display the brightest reds and purples in the autumn landscape. The range and intensity of autumn colors is greatly influenced by the weather. Low temperatures destroy chlorophyll and promote the formation of anthocyanins, if the nights stay above freezing. Bright sunshine also destroys chlorophyll and enhances anthocyanin production. Dry weather, by increasing sugar concentration in sap, also increases the amount of anthocyanin. So the brightest autumn colors are produced when dry, sunny days are followed by cool, dry nights. Friends!

Monday, May 26th, 2008

By Emma Alam Whosoever is delighted in solitude is either a wild beast or a god.A man who loves solitude is either a beast or an angel but it seems to be half true. Love of being isolated is indeed a symptom of a persons beastly nature, but it can seldom be a mark of godliness, unless it is a part of the renunciation of the world for higher spiritual meditation.Solitude has a wider implication that, what people generally believe it to have, for, an individual may feel lonely in a crowd, in the absence of affection. To a friendless man the world may be a wilderness. Friendship helps a man firstly to disburden his heart and secondly to clear the understanding. It helps us to ventilate those secret feelings, desires and frustrations, which would, if suppressed within the heart, cause melancholy. Feelings and emotions, if accumulated, eat the heart and destroy health, a friend ensures an outlet for these pent up feelings and gives us the way of Catharsis. Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts. And we are never ever the same. What is a best friend? Almost everyone has one, and almost everyone is one. Theres something about a best friend that cannot be duplicated. Everyone has their own definition of what their own best friend is like and what an impact he or she has made in their life. Lets take a better look at some of the simple things that we might take for granted when we think of our best friends. A best friend is a title held for the few and privileged. The term cannot be thrown around loosely. Not just anyone can be called your best friend. A best friend has to first meet several qualifications and have many outstanding characteristics to have the honor of holding such a prestigious title. Being a best friend is more than someone that youve seen everyday and grown up with. A best friend can be someone with whom youve known since childhood but can also be someone that youve just met. The true definition of a best friend is someone that knows you inside out and could go through thick n thin.Friend increases joy even as it lessens the intensity of grief. When we talk to friends our ideas take better shape and everything becomes clearer moreover arranged in order, whereas before, we felt our thoughts were confused, muddled and vague. A good friend helps us to improve our conduct, demeanor and avoid follies and mistakes, because a friendly advice is unbiased, thus reliable and pleasant at the same time. Being among number of people does not dispel loneliness, for the faces around one are as impersonal and cold as those one can see in the picture gallery, obviously one cannot establish any human contact with them. Similarly, talking with a number of people is as meaningless as the sounds produced by striking cymbals; there is no love or sympathy involved, whereas these very emotions lend meaning and value to a conversation and this can only happen between friends. Aloneness means the absence of friends, rather than the absence of people. Friendship can be compared to a tapestry, the beautiful designs of a tapestry can be seen clearly only when the cloth is unfolded and spread out. In the same way the ideas of man acquire a clear shape only when they are converted into words and heard by a trustworthy friend. Unexpressed thoughts lie in a perplexed state inside ones mind, just like the figures of a tapestry when it lies packed up. Discussion with a friend clarifies things. Speaking out ones ideas even to a dull friend who, is unable to give advice or guidance sharpens ones mind, because this friend serves as a whetstone for the mans mind which is like the razor, as a whetstone is not itself sharp but it serves to sharpen the knife or razor. In the same way the friend may be dull but still talking to him/her sharpens the intellect. People often commit terrible mistakes because they do not have sincere friends to bring them to an awareness of what they are doing, and as a result suffer loss of prosperity and reputation. These men lack self-knowledge, they are like those men who look into the mirror but are not able to really see what they are like, and others have to tell them what they really are. Such people are badly in need of a true friend who by timely criticism and sincere admonition will give them correct guidance. There are two dangers of consulting different persons on different matters, one is that a man will not receive fair and unbiased advice but will have some personal ends in view and his advice will be perverted to suit those ends. It is only a reliable and sincere friend who will give unselfish advice, keeping in mind only the interests of his/her friend who asked for the same. The other danger is that the advice may be partly useful and partly harmful, even if given with the best of intention can go into awry. Because a person who is unacquainted with a mans nature cannot give him advice, which is fully beneficial, as he is taking things in different perspective. Often in search of good friends we commit terrible mistakes by trusting on an unreliable person. But every person cant be judged in the same criterion as different people react in diverse ways even in the same set of circumstances. Hasty opinions about everyone can prove otherwise in the long run, as appearances are always deceptive. Some people are in the habit of changing friends weekly or by fortnight, after meeting someone and exchanging few words, one cannot claim friendship with anyone. Once you call someone a friend then his/her all merits and demerits should be accepted whole-heartedly. At length we have to agree with the same proverbial A friend in need is a friend indeed. The Fare Up There

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

By Michael Wallace Sadly my wallet doesn’t stretch far enough to allow me to indulge in the luxury of first class and rarely business class. So like the majority of other travellers I’m stuck in cattle class where comfort and lavish cuisine are disappointingly not the top priority for an airline. On a recent trip to Australia I experienced the full pleasures of Economy class with 23 hours of air time twice in two weeks! I’m sure anyone that has ventured farther a field than Europe has experienced the joys of airline food. The small pre-packaged arrangement that arrives on your tray is not the most appealing of three course meals. Hopefully by now you’ve managed to throw back a few alcoholic beverages to lessen the concern about its appearance, and what it actually contains. I know that after landing I felt a little worse for wear but I don’t know how much of this was to do with being stuck in my seat for far too long, the jet lag or infact the four airline meals that had been the only thing to pass my lips all day. Well, as ever I did a little research to find out what is going on. To get the situation into perspective there are a lot of these meals produced per day. Infact British Airways uses about 80,000 daily, that’s over 29 million per year just for a single carrier! It is an enormous number and goes some way to explaining why everything is ordered, labelled and completely pre packed, the logistics must be a nightmare. And I must say credit is due as I didn’t actually think a few of my meals were all that bad. Infact there was a beef dish that I really quite liked! To get to the bottom of the health impact though it’s important to understand the physical affects that flying has on your body and the consequences of sitting in a confined space for hours on end. Apart from the obvious like DVT, the digestive system also takes a hard knock. The air pressure inside a plane is equivalent to being on top of a mountain 2200 meters high so your whole body can swell making everything a little uncomfortable and not work particularly well. It’s known to mountain climbers that eating carbohydrates and reducing protein gives you an advantage when at altitude (your body relies less on fat as an energy source and more on carbs, it’s believed that this makes it easier for oxygen to dissolve in your blood). So this is good advice when selecting your meal too, the carbohydrates will help you feel better and think better. It’s even suggested that you will recover from your jetlag faster too. So instead of the chicken you should probably aim for a light vegetarian pasta or even a salad sandwich. Another side effect of altitude is that our taste buds don’t work correctly. That means that food tends to taste blander to us than it would if we ate the same meal when on the ground. To counteract this many airline catering firms will add large amounts of salt to try to boost the taste. We all know it’s hard to stay hydrated when flying (all that free booze doesn’t help either!) but adding large amounts of salt certainly doesn’t help. If you (like me) get swollen ankles when you have a long flight this could be an attributing factor. It’s good to know though that many airlines offer reduced salt meals. Like all other special meals you need to order them ahead of time, typically a day or two before your flight but it’s a good idea to make the effort if you can. With the lack of exercise and the fact our intestines are not running at peak performance the best solution would be to eat little and snack on a few carbohydrate rich snack bars when you’re peckish. To be honest though I need my meals and the thought of a fast would be too much to bear in an already uncomfortable situation. But if you’re a stronger individual than me it seems like a good option. I do get the feeling that the airlines are in a bit of a bind. People are used to eating chicken and beef in meals that are rich in flavour. This means that the airlines try to reproduce what the public want or at least something that they won’t turn their noses up at. So they are required to serve us highly salted, protein packed meals even though they are probably not the best thing for us. But I don’t think the airlines can be totally blame free just because they have meals hidden in the back of some trolley that are better for us, they need to make it more obvious that this is the case. If before the meal was wheeled out an announcement told me that the slightly bland pasta dish would make me feel better and stop my feet swelling I’d be at the front of the queue! So the next time I fly I think I will call my airline a few days before I fly to find out what special meals they can offer me. I might even go as far as to take a few healthy snacks along for the ride. I know that a days worth of relatively unhealthy meals won’t kill me but they certainly won’t make me any stronger! 7 Steps to Great Looking Eyelashes

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Sheila Dicks The old saying diamonds are a girls best friend is argued by many women maybe even you as being true. However, makeup experts would agree that mascara, even though it doesnt sparkle, does bring out a twinkle in the eyes and makes the face glow. This makes mascara a close competitor to diamonds as being a girls best friend. Whether your eyelashes are long and thick, or short and straight, mascara will enhance your eyes beauty. To make sure your eyelashes look their absolute best, here are 7 quick application tips. 1. If you have straight, short eyelashes, an eyelash curler is essential. Before you apply mascara position the eyelash curler over the lashes next to the base of your eyelashes and gently press for 25 seconds. Apply mascara. 2. As you pull out the wand of the mascara twirl it around in the tube so it is fully coated with mascara. Pumping the wand will make it dry out prematurely. 3. Hold the wand vertically to apply mascara to the lower lashes to avoid smudges. Use a Q-tip to go under the lashes after the application to get rid of extra buildup that might smudge. 4. Build the thickness of lashes with two light applications rather than one heavy one. Careful not too thick. 5. Comb through lashes between coats with an eyelash comb to give a fuller, thicker look. 6. Replace your mascara every 3 months to avoid bacteria. 7. Match mascara with your coloring. If you have dark hair use black, if your hair is lighter wear brown. Stay away from blue. The Best Loan Alternatives

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Kenny]Peter Kenny When thinking about borrowing money, most people look at loans as the most sensible option. Although it is true that loans are often a good option for borrowing money, they are also inflexible, and if you are someone who wants to pay back your loan early then there can be heavy penalties. However, there are some alternatives to loans if you want to borrow money: Overdrafts One of the cheapest ways of borrowing money is through the use of an overdraft, especially if you want to borrow money on a short-term basis. Your bank can agree an amount of excess to the amount you currently have in your account, which you can use but will pay interest on. By authorising an overdraft you can use this money as a permanent line of credit. Some banks even off interest free overdrafts. However, overdrafts are still not advisable as a long term means of borrowing money, and the amount of credit you can get is often fairly low. Credit cards Credit cards are one of the most common alternatives to loans, and can provide you with a good source of extra money when needed. If you can get the level of credit you need and are able to pay off the bill promptly, then you will pay little or no interest. However, the major problem with credit cards is that the interest is usually higher than a loan, and there is a danger of getting too many cards. If you avoid these dangers, then using a credit card as an alternative to loans can work well. Mortgages Mortgages are perhaps the best way to borrow large sums of money over a long period of time. You can add credit to your mortgage by borrowing against the equity in your home and adding that amount to your repayments. The advantages of a mortgage are that the interest rate is low and the payments are spread out so the payments appear small. However, because you are paying back over a long period of time, the interest can still add up, and you will not pay the amount back for a long time. Hire purchase Hire purchase is useful if you are borrowing money to buy a car or high value electrical goods. Car dealers often offer this method of borrowing money during the sale. In hire purchase, you pay a deposit and then pay monthly payments to the provider. When these payments are finished, then the item belongs to you. This is a good method for buying a car as the interest is often lower than a normal loan, and it is made easy by the fact that the credit is provided by the seller. However, it is called hire purchase because until you finish all of the payments, you do not own the item, and if you miss payment the item can be repossessed. Which is best? Deciding if one of these loan alternatives is right for you can be tricky, but to help you decide you should work out what it is you want to borrow money for, how long you want to be paying back the money, and your overall financial situation. If you look at all the options, then you will find the best method of credit for your needs.
